When I was in high school we celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day for the first time. I was one few black students in the school. I wrote the first verse of the poem back then and shared it for a school project.

I have a Dream

I have a dream, I have a dream, I’m not the first to dream, and I wont be the last. I have a dream
We shall overcome. We shall overcome
Deep within my heart, this I do believe
We shall Overcome (some day)

I woke up one morning possessed with a dream
That people of all color could live as a team
Judging each other only by their deeds
Not by predetermined thoughts about their race or creed
Living in peace without hate or fear
I thank the Lord always, because that day is near
It’ll be like a picture of heaven, in vivid colors so bright
But to get to that point we have to struggle and fight
Like the ones before us who have suffered and died
So the day will arrive when we can walk side by side
Red, and yellow, black, and white no matter the color
We’re all made in God’s image and we’re sisters and brothers

I’m not JFK, or Martin Luther King
I’m no one well known I’m just doing my thing
Spreading the word to everyone I see
That none of us are free until we all are free
We can end racism take the Bible’s advice
Paul says in spite of differences we’re all united in Christ
In Christ all things, become new, including society too
You want to know where it starts? It starts with me and you
We wrestle not against flesh, but principalities,
Prejudice thoughts, and the powers that be
We shall overcome the multitude cries
But we aint all overcome, so No I aint satisfied
