I Used to Know
Confessional alt-country track inspired by an ACID loops CD of steel guitar riffs I bought. From my eclectic-but-mostly-pop CD "Jardin du Luxembourg, available at www.cdbaby.com/bruceirving.

About the song
I bought a CD of ACIDized loops of steel guitar riffs, and some of these riffs triggered a melody idea that turned into this song, with just acoustic guitar and a little synth bass and strings added. It reminds me of some of Neil Young's songs from the "Gold Rush" period (which I really love).
Lyrics
I USED TO KNOW
I used to know what I wanted
I used to know myself
I used to think someday I'd be somebody
But that was somebody else
You know it's strange, one day you turn around
Next day you turn back
And the place you swore you'd never be
Is right where you're at
CHORUS
Everything I used to know is wrong
And everyone I used to know is gone
And you took the longest time leaving
And I can't say why
But I used to know
I had a chip on my shoulder
More like a boulder I guess
My dad tried to knock me from under that chip
But he failed just like all the rest
You know it's love everybody wants
There must be something to that
And I swore that I wanted it too
But never gave any back
CHORUS
You saw the good in me I couldn't see
You saw the future that I couldn't be
You were my lifeline and my everything else
But you couldn't give me a heart
that you needed yourself
