About the song
I wanted to write about when I was in Denver in 1979, hitchhiking through but broke, living out of my backpack. I was going to try (the only time I ever did) a homeless shelter, which was in a rough part of Denver. I had to get there by nightfall because they locked the doors for protection and couldn't let anyone in after that (or out I guess). Middle of Denver, I'm walking in the center but the street is empty. All the office people around during the days (felt safer then) just deserted the place after 5 p.m., and then it was like the wolves came out. Anyway, I was hurrying to get to the shelter, and WHOOSH...a fist sized stone (maybe it grew in my recollection?) came shooting such that I could hear the flutter of it breaking the wind by my eardrum. It landed far down the street, and I wheeled around to confront my attacker(s) and...
There was no one there.

That was more frightening than if there was a whole gang. Gave me the creeps. I turned back and ended up sleeping in the park under some bushes.

Later on I had my guitar (a very cheap Elko) stolen while I slept.

That's what this one is about.
Lyrics
Once I had a vision tell me,
Pack it up, just go!,
I left behind my life so far, I
thought I was alone

Standing on a friendless road just,
waiting for a ride,
I thought at least whatever happens now,
I'm moving with my tides

In the belly of the beast,
city streets at night,
A stone shoots by my head head I spin,
There's not a soul in sight

One step older,
everyday,
one step closer one,
step away

Daylight wakes me up each morning,
exhausted from the cold
Another day of "watch my back"
Another day unfolds

There is no safety anywhere,
There is no safety anywhere,
Not even for a billionaire,
Our safety's all illusion

One step older,
everyday,
one step closer one,
step away
