About the song
Sometimes contradictions can make life seem complicated, but they can also be empowering. This song says, don't let me out of this trap until I know what's wrong--and come rescue me, I can't figure it out alone. Life behind voluntary bars, shut up inside society's easy bondage.
Half-alive? Happy to be down and out? That's what the subway images and statues come alive are supposed to be about anyway.
Though the particular "garden gnome" variety of statue is a shout-out to Balentine who was the first other person to set my lyrics to music.
