Lyrics
On the mantle, there’s a flag folded by the men
Who laid my dad to rest years ago
Solemnly they thanked me for the sacrifice he gave
I wonder if they knew the man I’ve known
He was a kind man and a friend
A clown until the end
Entertaining grandkids on the floor
How he loved to watch them play
Telling stories and model trains
You would never guess he’d ever seen a war
In the trenches, with the men gunfire overhead
Mortars falling ‘round them did he pray
When he ran the battlefield from foxhole to a tree
I wonder if my Father was afraid
He was a brave man to defend
A soldier to the end
Standing with his comrades facing war
How he lived what he believed
Wore his pride upon his sleeve
I have never known a greater man before
Who laid my dad to rest years ago
Solemnly they thanked me for the sacrifice he gave
I wonder if they knew the man I’ve known
He was a kind man and a friend
A clown until the end
Entertaining grandkids on the floor
How he loved to watch them play
Telling stories and model trains
You would never guess he’d ever seen a war
In the trenches, with the men gunfire overhead
Mortars falling ‘round them did he pray
When he ran the battlefield from foxhole to a tree
I wonder if my Father was afraid
He was a brave man to defend
A soldier to the end
Standing with his comrades facing war
How he lived what he believed
Wore his pride upon his sleeve
I have never known a greater man before
