Lament is in a single movement comprising three main sections and a coda, lasting around eight minutes. Each section is characterized by an accumulation of harmonic, rhythmic and textural tension which becomes progressively more extreme until, at the close of the third section, it finally reaches breaking point to find release in the quiet contemplation of the coda. Lament was awarded the 1991 Cobbett and Hurlstone Prize for Composition and was featured at the 1992 Bath International Music Festival in a showcase concert for the Society for the Promotion of New Music given by the ensemble Capricorn conducted by Anthony Pay.
