About the song
The music for this song was pretty much written, I had some lyrics for it, but hadn't tracked the vocals.
I had been having chest/throat problems for about six months. OK, so I'm a guy and don't fancy seeing the doctor. I figured it would go away on it's own, but it didn't.
I couldn't sing more than a few lines before taking an hour break. The album had crawled to a stop because I couldn't track any vocals. Time turned to August, I was now having trouble even talking with the pain. Doctor dislikes aside, I finally went to an ENT specialist on a Thursday.
He looked me over found a tumor in my throat and told me to get a CAT scan immediately. I went in for the scan the next day.
I went home Friday and rewrote the words to this song. Though it was extremely painful, the events drove me to record the vocals that weekend.
I got a call the following week. The tumor was benign and I had it removed a few months later. It took about two years before my voice came back in full.

Lyrics
spent the last year of my life
come to understand my darker side
when the boy and man at last collide
is your mercy there, can I trust, can I rely
someone like you, can make it all turn out right
someone like you, open my eyes show me life
you are like the souvenier
I collected on the beach that day
when I was six and mom and dad
promised they would always stay
you are like the ancient coin
that I found when I was ten
took to school for show and tell
on the playground showed my friends
someone like you
when mountains fall and valleys rise
and heaven shakes stars from the skys
you are the one who dries my tears
you are the one who calms my fears
soon the morning comes
come to understand my darker side
when the boy and man at last collide
is your mercy there, can I trust, can I rely
someone like you, can make it all turn out right
someone like you, open my eyes show me life
you are like the souvenier
I collected on the beach that day
when I was six and mom and dad
promised they would always stay
you are like the ancient coin
that I found when I was ten
took to school for show and tell
on the playground showed my friends
someone like you
when mountains fall and valleys rise
and heaven shakes stars from the skys
you are the one who dries my tears
you are the one who calms my fears
soon the morning comes
