About the song
This was a lyric I couldn't resist and although Harriet does her own music I asked if I could tune this one up my way and she agreed. One day I would like to hear what she had in mind for this
Lyrics
Why Don't I feel Like I Belong
(c)Harriet Ames/Idamarie Naelitz 2003
I remembered how they'd laughed so gleefully
When the doubts were strong, I'd think, was it at me
I thought that no one else had known the pain that I knew
But, here was someone else who said / he felt it too
He told me confidence can be a fleeting thing
One misread word or glance and it takes wing
Like looking in a mirror, I knew just what he meant
I felt an old familiar pain at his lonely lament
CHORUS:
Why don't I feel like I belong
They all walk in rhythm, but, I hear another song
You say it's just variety, but, to me it just seems wrong
Tell me why don't I feel like I belong
I'd tried to learn thier ways, but, they weren't mine
And in time I learned a style I could define
I thought I was beyond them, but, my wounds had never healed
With just a word or two, he brought down my fragile shield
CHORUS:
bridge
We laughed at those / who weren't like us
We learned to follow closely, to be cool
Then someone said diversify, variety is good
And you don't have to follow all those rules!
But confidence can be / a fleeting thing
One misled phrase, and it's gone again
From the barrooms to the backroads / we've all felt the same
And in our weakest moments, we all exclaim
Chorus:
Why don't I feel like I belong
The all walk in rhythm, but I hear another song
You say it's just variety, but, to me it just seems wrong
Tell me why don' t I feel like I belong
Tell me why don't I feel like I belong
I don't belong--------
