This song really should have been done with more of a ‘country’ slant and a new version will surface very soon to reflect that view. The overdriven guitar now seems like an act of denial, a desire to disguise the authentic roots of the song. The treatment should have been more Hank Williams and less U2. The protagonist is hooked up with someone who is addicted to deceit and trivial pursuits. Not the game, obviously.
