A sinister-sounding workout through an amorous misadventure

This track was once described to me as being ‘like a cross between The The and U2’, which I took to be a compliment. Lyrically, it’s a sorry tale of two cynical people and their abject failure to resist temptation. There is some groove-tastic rhythmical stuff going on between Paul and Billy on this demo; I seem to recall that we played it straight to tape using a little electronic drum kit. I like the contrast between the spacey instrumentation on the verse and the dense, heavily detailed vocals. The semi-spoken delivery is kind of hard to warm to, but maybe that was the point of it.
