About the song
This piece addresses the way western society is destroying itself by focusing only on short-term goals and satisfaction rather than looking at "the long now."
In the USA we are disconnected from the rest of the world. We are an island of excess. We live in our own parallel universe divorced from the concerns of those not fortunate enough to live here.
Advertisers cut us down and say we need their products to be whole. The larger part of many of our lives is spent working at jobs we don't like to buy things that we don't need to impress people we don't like. What is wrong with this picture?
I don't have an answer to society's problems, but for myself, I am taking time to do the things I find important and fulfilling. At some point, I will die and between now and then, I want to do what I can to make my dreams real. Otherwise, WTF?
