About the song
Growing up by the ocean, I have always associated "home" with attributes of the sea - the sound of the foghorn in the night, the smell of the salt air, the soothing sound and motion of the waves - so I think it was only natural for me to connect those memories with my nostalgic feelings toward the people and places of my past. I wondered one day what it would really be like to "go back home again," and the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the only constant was the sea - everything else had changed, or was gone forever.
Lyrics
Climb in my car and turn the key
Head for the sunset, looking toward the sea
Long forgotten highways lead me on alone
Forget about the miles, I'm going home
Open the door, hinges creak with rust
Open the windows, moonlight dances on the dust
Smiling friendly faces only in my memory
All they've left are traces
And there is no one left at home to welcome me
So I listen to the calling of the sea
Saying, "Come a little closer, I'll teach you my melody."
Nothing to hold my heart here
Just a lot of empty rooms
Lonelier than a tomb
'Cause there is no one left at home to welcome me
So I listen to the music of the sea
Singing, "Come and be my lover,
Come sing my melody...
My melody...
My melody..."
Head for the sunset, looking toward the sea
Long forgotten highways lead me on alone
Forget about the miles, I'm going home
Open the door, hinges creak with rust
Open the windows, moonlight dances on the dust
Smiling friendly faces only in my memory
All they've left are traces
And there is no one left at home to welcome me
So I listen to the calling of the sea
Saying, "Come a little closer, I'll teach you my melody."
Nothing to hold my heart here
Just a lot of empty rooms
Lonelier than a tomb
'Cause there is no one left at home to welcome me
So I listen to the music of the sea
Singing, "Come and be my lover,
Come sing my melody...
My melody...
My melody..."
