About the song
'Want What You Have' screams at the rampant materialism that pervades the lives of many people, including Christians, in my town. Always running from place to place spending, then waving what was bought in the faces of others. And the 'surrogate parenting' (clubs, lessons, camps, trips, etc) done by those outside the family. Just a huge parade of spending. It's such a shame to watch the effect this has on children and families.

'Marcel DuChamp' was likely my first overtly spiritual song, composed around 1989 and extensively modified and rearranged since. Every band I've led since getting out of the Navy in 1990 has played 'Marcel'. The song is a tribute to the type of person (in this case, an artist) who continues plugging away at what he believes is true and good, despite the ire of some observers. Jesus was exactly such a man.
Lyrics
Want What You Have
by bret harold hart

We’re too busy counting our property…too busy building walls...We spend too much time in front of mirrors…too much time in malls...Learn to want what you have Learn to want what you have...Open your arms and eyes and hearts Try to want what you have Our fears make us hallucinate Our trust runs out the door...We don’t try hard enough with the things deserving more Learn to want what you have... Learn to want what you have... Open your arms and eyes and hearts Try to want what you have

Marcel Duchamp
by bret harold hart

The laying-on of hands…hands without arms, just hands…a pile 4 feet wide, 2 miles high, swaying…whose hand will crown this mound? Whose hands are these? Slap-Slap-Slap…here comes another one, falling from the sky…but, that’s not a hand! It’s a heart, right on top, right on top of the hands. whose hand will crown this mound? Whose hands are these? Slap-Slap-Slap…
