This is how John came to write this tune and why it's called The Imposter.

A few years ago, before the REAL Peter Green began playing again and formed the Splinter Group, another guy was going round impersonating him, and fooled a lot of people. This guy could play guitar a bit, and apparently resembled him facially enough to be able to convince people, even some very well known musicians who'd known the real Peter Green previously. This guy played gigs as Peter Green and got away with it, even though the other musicians found themselves 'carrying' him more than they might have expected! Everyone was naturally prepared to make allowances for the ravages of the passing years to have taken their toll on both his looks and his playing.

John had known the fake guy previously before all this started, and his sense of injustice stirred him into writing 'The Imposter', with the intention of giving it to the real Peter Green as a warning to alert him to what had been going on. John went to one of his gigs with a copy of it, but was unable to get backstage to speak to him.
