About the song
We didnt have very much when I was a little girl. Daddy would work day and night just to make ends meet. Daddy worked at a coal temple in Ky. Durning the day he worked his regular job loading trains with coal and at night it was time to go back and work some more, they called it wildcatting coal. Anyway, I hated to see my daddy work so hard and when it came time for him to leave I remember my heart would just break into because I knew that he wanted to stay home with me and mom and my sister but hed say its ok dont cry, daddy loves you and Ill be home soon, then hed say the words that always made me feel better. Hed say, thats daddys little girl.
Well I started to think that day that daddy should have something very special for his birthday and my memories of the old days when I was a little girl at home started flowing threw my mind. So I sat down at my computer and opend up the home studio and got my guitar and wrote daddys little girl.
The story behind the first verse is simple. I would`nt trade my daddy for anyone else in the whole world. I feel truly blessed just have known my dad.
The story behind the 2nd verse:
I remembered the morning it was snowing and cold very cold, school had been cancelled because the snow was so deep but daddy was up very early that morning alot earlier then usual. I got out of bed to see why. Daddy said that it was just to cold and our old car wouldnt start. He worked and worked on it so he could get to work but it just wouldnt start so he said he would just have to walk to work. Now remember it is very very cold and the snow is falling so I started to cry. Daddy just looked at me and smiled and held me close and said daddy loves you, thats daddys girl. He said not to worry hed be alright.
The last verse is the one that hurts the most. Daddy was working on a railroad switch and long story short the switch feel back and cought daddys finger in it. Daddy was taken to the er where they told him his finger was gone and they couldnt re attach it. I came home from school that day to see my granny sitting on the couch crying and daddy sitting beside her with blood all over his face and his close and his hand all bandaged up and they told me that daddy had cut his finger off. Well I started to cry but daddy just looked at me and he said dont cry, daddy loves you, Daddy will be alright. He held me in his armd and said thats daddys girl.
That is how I got this song. I recorded it that same day on daddys birthday and I took him the cd and I told him that I didnt have the money to buy him anything but I hoped that hed like the song I wrote for him. He sat down to listed to it and tears begain to fall from his eyes. Keep in mind that this is a man who never crys. He walked over to me and put his arms around my and he said, Thats daddys little girl...
