About the song
Anastasia Moonshadow - or, as her parents call her, Stacey - is not a real person, or even an impersonation of one. However, I can safely say that I have met her.
The wiccan/neo-Pagan movement is no longer distinct from the gothic subculture, to, I believe, the mutual disbenefit of both sides. This is mainly due to people like Stacey.
The first two lines of "Weekend Witch" came easily, and it was all downhill from there. Llewellyn Press was at the time of writing (and perhaps still is) the publisher of choice for cheesy, pastel-and-rainbow coloured Wicca 101 books. The movie referred to in the first verse is The Craft (1996): a film worth seeing for the hilarious combination of an accurate and sensitive description of teenage neo-paganism and insane horror-movie cliches. And Fairuza Balk, who was pretty hot. Bauhaus were, of course, the first of the post-punk rock groups to be called "gothic", and are still the most fashionable.
Many of my wiccan or gothic friends enquired suspiciously after it was released who it was about. The correct answer was, of course, all of them.
Lyrics
Black eyeliner, black velvet dress,

She bought six books from Llewellyn Press

Now she's a Weekend Witch - a Weekend Witch

Saw a movie all about magic spells

She was sure she could do it just as well

Now she's set to plumb the cosmos

From the safety of her room

Her aura incandescent

To relieve her teenage gloom

CHORUS1: She's a weekend witch, with a weekday mind

And some silver stars that she leaves behind

And it might seem funny, but it's what she does

And you can't return her to the way she was

She's a weekend witch from the magic wood

And I wish like hell I looked half as good

But at least she means well...

(At least she means something)

And that's better than nothing at all.

Altar candles, altered state of mind

Cranking up the Bauhaus, closing the blind

Now she's a Weekend Witch - a Weekend Witch

Calls the invocation, only wearing skin

Hopes her parents don't come blundering in -

She wears a name from a fantasy novel

A cloak, a jewel, a hat

She knows her Tarot back to front

And she channels Cleopatra's cat -

CHORUS2: She's a Weekend Witch, with a weekday mind

And some silver stars that she leaves behind

And if she can't stand it, then it's overthrown

This is how she planned it, so just leave her alone

She's a Weekend Witch, and she turns me on

Though I can't help thinking that her mind is gone

But at least she means well

(At least she means something)

And that's better than nothing at all.

INSTRUMENTAL

Can I touch you, Weekend Witch

Or can I leave my mark

Your face is white, your lips are black

You're glowing in the dark

She's a Priestess of the Mysteries with a new crystal ball

So they think she's a weirdo? She'll show them all!

Now she's a Weekend Witch - a Weekend Witch

Her mum don't understand her - her boyfriend's worse

She's hunting through her books for some kind of curse...

She's drifting through the Otherworld

In search of certainty

But the reflection of her makeup in the mirror

Is all we see

(repeat Chorus1)

...and at least she means well

At least she means something

And that's better than nothing at all.
