About the song
For a long time I've wanted to write a song about watching TV. This is my first attempt -- it became my companion song to one of my favorite country ballads, "Did I shave my legs for this?". This song describes a similar scene to that song, but from the other perspective, which makes it more of a challenge, since it's harder to sympathize with the shlub in front of the TV than with disappointed wife.
Lyrics
I worked all day; I don't want to talk
Would you just pass the remote?
Don't want to sit and eat, don't feel like a walk,
please just pass the remote.
Hey would you look at that guy try and run
Did he think he'd get away
Well you don't get away with selling drugs
I hate how they blur how his face
Come on darlin', why the face?
Guess I knew you didn't like cops
Well the show's almost over anyway
Let's see what else is on
There's a fat bald shrink and he's got a fat lady on
And she's desperate for advice
He says she uses food the way I use the tube
To take the edge off the sharp parts of life
I worked all day, I don't want to talk
What's wrong with watching TV?
Don't see why you turned the TV off
Why you want to talk about you and me.
Come on babe, don't walk away
It ain't my fault there's nothing on
Maybe it's just this time of day
I can't give you what you want
Would you just pass the remote?
Don't want to sit and eat, don't feel like a walk,
please just pass the remote.
Hey would you look at that guy try and run
Did he think he'd get away
Well you don't get away with selling drugs
I hate how they blur how his face
Come on darlin', why the face?
Guess I knew you didn't like cops
Well the show's almost over anyway
Let's see what else is on
There's a fat bald shrink and he's got a fat lady on
And she's desperate for advice
He says she uses food the way I use the tube
To take the edge off the sharp parts of life
I worked all day, I don't want to talk
What's wrong with watching TV?
Don't see why you turned the TV off
Why you want to talk about you and me.
Come on babe, don't walk away
It ain't my fault there's nothing on
Maybe it's just this time of day
I can't give you what you want
