About the song
This song was written in 2003 following a trauma in the family and focuses on the dark side of Psalm 23 but with highlights (wild flowers grow in the dark valleys due to God's grace).
I composed the music in the shower and it seemed easy enough to sing at the time, but it has since proved to be a real vocal challenge due to it's range so I was very pleased to hear Alan Tan's voice rise to the challenge. I love the haunting pipe music arranged by Timothy Lee. It evokes the mist of mountains and valleys.
Lyrics
The valleys low I roam
yet the shadows I don’t dread
for Christ is my guide
I’m not alone: He goes ahead.
I’ll endure the darkest moments,
I’ll tightly hold His hand,
and when the devil tries to strike
I’ll let him see Christ in command.
The threat of death, the darkest gorge
will never quench His light.
In fact the wild flowers grow there by His grace.
And in the stillness of His rest
I take assurance of His love
and I recognise the Shepherd in His face.
