I wrote this tune about the death of a good friend who was a roadie. He helped me carry my stuff, traveled untold thousands of miles with me, and became a close friend. I never had to wonder if anyone was watching my back when he was around.

Lyrics
A friend of mine told me the news today
As time stood still, I stared at nothing
Hoping to awake
The words boiled up like rising tide
Shapeless as a face from Picasso's notebook
I just can't believe you're gone

What started out as just a way
To have a little fun
Became a fight to the death
But the bottle and the pills, they finally won
La de da de da da da, de de de de dum
As friends go you were second to none

Held in the grip of foggy needs within
Seduced by a bottle's embrace
Until it lured you over the edge
If the Devil loves a senseless waste
He must be laughing now, I can hear the echoes
Of the love you shared with all except yourself

Well, Steve, this song's about you
But really, it's for me
'Cause unlike you
I have not been freed of Earthly need
La de da de da da da, de de de de dum
As friends go, you were second to none
As friends go, you were second to none
Lord knows I wish I never had to
