This is my first serious cover song, my version of "False CIty" by Northcape. The first time I heard this one, I knew I wanted to do a version of it, and it's still my favorite work by Alastair.
It features Ed Drury on Didjideroo at the end. My cousin, Sherri Anderson joins me also on violin.
The song uses a lot of the original version in it, although everything except the pad it opens and closes with and the drum track is played manually. The thing I enjoy about Northcape is Alastair doesn't write like everyone else. He comes up with some of the most interesting twists when it comes to chord patterns and basslines, so much so that playing them with fingers and improvising to them was a challenge. The chord progressions, basslines, and the pad/trumpet thing at the end is all Alastair's writing, played as close to what he wrote as was possible. The drum machine programming, percussion, and improvised parts are where his song took me musically.
This song is one of those that developed as I worked on it, bu because of the name, I kept seeing visiting New York City in my mind, and tried to capture the various different parts of the city musically. So enjoy a journey into New York via I-78. You'll pass by Newark Airport as you head toward manhatten and tour the various islands of the city, and all the sudden get to the unpopulated tip of Long Island.
