Seraph's Wings
Story about a man who starts out believing in his self-sufficiency only to find that he needs "the brush of seraph's wings" to come and "touch the coal to my lips." Fans of Dave Matthews will enjoy the similar guitar and vocal stylings of this song.

About the song
I wrote this song after hearing a Bible study based on Isaiah 6 taught by Rob Verdeyen, pastor at Calvary Chapel Corvallis. The song speaks of a man who thinks he can make it on his own without God, only to discover that he needs the seraphim to come with the live coal from the altar to cleanse his lips. Features the lead electric guitar work of my good friend Aaron Koch.
Lyrics
Sun's shining, birds are singing
Life couldn't be better now
I see no reason to bend my knees
Or touch my brow 'gainst the ground
I don't need some God as Master
Of my life I have myself
I've managed well thus far and
I don't need anyone else
No, I scoff at those who lean on
Some crutch with a man nailed to it
Why should I give over control
When I do as I see fit
But the sun that seemed to shine
On my good times began to burn
My lies away, no shelter did I have
From you, now I've found how
I need the brush of seraph's wings
Live coal carried in fingertips
Holy, holy, holy to God they sing
Touch the coal to my lips
I am cleansed (x4)
Now that I've stepped down from the throne
And placed the crown at your feet
Why must I needs still fight the urge
To don its weight in my sleep
My thoughts betray, my words reveal a sinful man
Unclean lips confess my need for Jesus
To come and stand between us
Isaiah 6:1-8; Jonah 4:5-11
Life couldn't be better now
I see no reason to bend my knees
Or touch my brow 'gainst the ground
I don't need some God as Master
Of my life I have myself
I've managed well thus far and
I don't need anyone else
No, I scoff at those who lean on
Some crutch with a man nailed to it
Why should I give over control
When I do as I see fit
But the sun that seemed to shine
On my good times began to burn
My lies away, no shelter did I have
From you, now I've found how
I need the brush of seraph's wings
Live coal carried in fingertips
Holy, holy, holy to God they sing
Touch the coal to my lips
I am cleansed (x4)
Now that I've stepped down from the throne
And placed the crown at your feet
Why must I needs still fight the urge
To don its weight in my sleep
