About the song
I wrote this song at an emotionally 'numb' point in my life. Actually, writing it kind of brought me out of that state. I was having a hard time getting songs out, because up to that point, I had only written about my own personal experiences and relationships. It seemed like there wasn't really anything going on outside of my career life. I decided to try something new and draw from friends' relationships. As I watched a close friend struggle with a fresh break-up, the lyrics and melody began to flow...
Lyrics
I hear the phone ring
I’m lying awake, but I
Wait for the message
Even though I know
I won’t hear your voice anymore
What’s this emptiness surrounding me
Is it too soon to tell
I’d rather be anywhere with you
Than trapped in my mind
Here in this hell
I’m drowning

It’s a hopeless equation
You and me, me and you
Divided by another
Or am I just crazy
To think we should have what we wish for
Well, I heard from someone
Who heard from another
That she’s got you so weak
You can barely stand
And I know it’s only hearsay
But please hear me when I say
I think we deserve another chance

Chorus:
I’m drowning
I’m down again
Why is it any fool could see
I gave you the best part of me
And now I’m drowning
I’m down again
Why is it any fool could see
You need me
And I need you

Let’s get ourselves together, here
We can have what we wish for
If both believe we can find it
I am here with open arms
And I’m trying to get through to you
Just leave the past behind

Chorus
