About the song
Coyote Whispers is a collection of memories of Kat Rose growing up in Brownsville, Texas. Terri was next door neighbor and best friend. Her house was built over a coyote's den. We used to fish at the end of our road at the ponds called RESACAS in Brownsville. On the way to the resaca, there was a patch of bamboo that we used to fashion our poles to fish. There were really pines nearby that I remember listening to while we fished. Since we were a new neighborhood in the sticks, we always had the smell of fresh cut wood and could hear hammers building the newest house. My mother was born in Oklahoma and her grandmother was Cherokee. I felt a connection to the Trail of Tears that I needed to express in this song. It couldn't be finished until a dear friend added the Native Flute. I hope you enjoy a few of my memories and my questions in the change we go through in life.
Lyrics
Coyote Whispers
Written by: KatRose
Theresa walked barefoot to the end of the rocky road
She wanted to fish at the dam with her homemade bamboo pole.
And the wind rustled through the pines
You see, little girls don’t notice the signs
Of hammers as they pound in the distance
They take away all natural existence
Of memories that belong
But the coyote call will go on
I hear coyotes calling (2X), Calling me home (3X)
Theresa’s mama woke her from her midnight summer screams
Coyotes came a’ calling to her as they wandered through her dreams
Leading her on a hidden trail of tears
River spirits crying through the years
Voices circle claiming back the land
Creatures rising up at their command
As rainstorms echo the song
And the coyote call will go on
I hear coyotes calling, Calling me home
Footsteps fade where there was once a rocky road
Shadows of Theresa and her homemade bamboo pole.
