About the song
"Maria's in Jail", a throwback to Kent's carefree Chicago youth, combines influences from indie rock and R&B-- a They Might Be Giants meets Wilson Pickett sort of affair. It is based in part on "Carl and Brian", a song performed by Kent's former band Mint Aundry, and a lost lyric from his last Chicago band, Sweet Bridget (now Kite Club.) "Maria's in Jail" first appeared on the Red Herring Band's unreleased CD "Eclectic City", which featured more of Kent's songwriting.
Lyrics
Carl and Brian wasting away
Maria's in jail and nobody pays
Addison, a sculptor cradles
A cast-off snare from a pop band that's already gone

Carl and Brian wasting away
Maria's in jail and nobody pays
Addison, a sculptor cradles
A cast-off snare from a pop band that's already gone

Carl and Brian wasted away
Maria's in jail all of her days
Carl and Brian wasting away
Maria's in jail and nobody pays
Carl and Brian
Maria's in jail
Coast to coast and on to Chicago
Carl and Brian wasting away
