About the song
i remember this phone call i had with my dad, dad is telling me about joe's passing and i'm crying and i'm at school and miserable and just want to be home , thinking it might be better there, so i'm blowing my nose on my sheets, and dad and i are trading stories about his Uncle Joe. On his nightstand when he died was my thankyou letter for his christmas gift, and when Joe died and my dad went to his house to take stock of his affairs, he saw my brother's thankyou letter on the table, unopened, and brought it home and said, "you know, you really have to send these sooner." which was a nice joke for the occasion. Uncle Joe had a phenomenal amount of warm love for his grandnieces and nephews, had a big round nose perched on a wrinkly face with big hearing aids and this toothy grin and a strong firm opinion on all things pertinent to education... he was an educator, an administrator, and a damn good guy.
Lyrics
heard every story on the phone last night
we cross silent spaces with our memories
and he said he's ready
that helen's waiting for him
and i heard my grandfather cried
when he realized his brother would die before him
it runs in our family to be stubborn
we're all a little hard of hearing,
christmas dinners were always interesting
and he said he's ready
that helen's waiting for him
and i heard my grandfather cried
when he realized his brother would die before him
we cross silent spaces with our memories
and he said he's ready
that helen's waiting for him
and i heard my grandfather cried
when he realized his brother would die before him
it runs in our family to be stubborn
we're all a little hard of hearing,
christmas dinners were always interesting
and he said he's ready
that helen's waiting for him
and i heard my grandfather cried
when he realized his brother would die before him
