My daughter explained some minor tragedy when she was three years old by noting that "balloons go pop". I figure she got that right.

She had her white boots on

standing in the doorway
holding a busted red balloon

she considered this revelation
in her little girl way
and I considered the matter closed
until one day
up pipes this toddler voice
from the back of the car
