About the song
My daughter explained some minor tragedy when she was three years old by noting that "balloons go pop". I figure she got that right.
Lyrics
She had her white boots on
she was wearing big girl pants
standing in the doorway
holding a busted red balloon
she said daddy fix it
I said honey I can't
there are some things even daddies can't do
she considered this revelation
in her little girl way
and I considered the matter closed
until one day
up pipes this toddler voice
from the back of the car
she said daddy I know now
just how lucky we are
Balloons go pop
that what they do
daddies can't fix them
and I know it's true
there must be other things
daddies can't fix
I said it's just the beginning
of a very long list
A few years later
when her grandpa passed
she said daddy I'm so sad
how long does the sad part last?
I said honey I don't know
how long the hurting goes on
but the hole in your heart fills up
and pretty soon it's gone
Balloons go pop
that what they do
daddies can't fix them
and I know it's true
there must be other things
daddies can't fix
I said it's just the beginning
of a very long list
She's all grown up now
ain't nobody's little girl any more
but sometimes her mom and I
get that knock on the door
she'll come in crying
throw herself on the bed and say
something like it's just not fair
she doesn't expect any kind of answer from us
she knows what we're going to say
Balloons go pop
that what they do
daddies can't fix them
and I know it's true
there must be other things
daddies can't fix
I said it's just the beginning
of a very long list
