About the song
Road Movie was originally titled Summer Hysteria because that's the hookline. It's partly about men's fear of female sexuality and it's partly about a stiflingly hot day in Wherever, USA. Ronnie Johnson's moody guitar completely captures the feeling I had in my head when I wrote it.
This track was voted runner-up Record Of The Year 2003 by listeners to Radio Six International.

ROAD MOVIE
(summer hysteria)
©Woodstock Taylor

I was in this hotel in my private hell
Waiting for the call-up from a rebel yell
Or the start of the ultimate adventure
Is that why they sent ya?

Waiting for something to happen

I was standing at the bar when the man said "Hey,
Do you realise the outline of the devil's head
Is the same shape as the female genitalia?"
And I said "Hey, what can I tell ya?"

Waiting for something to happen

And the sun shone down on the metal cars
Melting their plastic interiors
One of those high pressure periods
A summer hysteria

Well, the man at the bar, he quit polishing his gun
And he turned and took the shoulders of his teenage son
And said "Let me tell you 'bout winning and losing, son -
You gotta never let your fear do the choosing."

Waiting for something to happen

And the sun shone down on the metal cars
Melting their plastic interiors
One of those high pressure periods
A summer hysteria
