About the song
I spent some years living, working and playing with Native Americans.. I'd read of The Indian Removal Act of the 1830's, a law that forced the 5 "civilized tribes" of the southeastern US from their homes in a very dark chapter of American history..

Tho a hero to many, Andy Jackson was a principal player in this miscarrigage of justice.. a hero of the Battle of New Orleans, the War of 1812 had been ended by The Treaty of Ghent several weeks earlier tho the news had not reached The New World before the battle started..

Hundreds of Indians died on a forced march called "The Trail of Tears" from Georgia to Oklahoma..

(This version of the song features Rick Kanton on guitar and vocals, Davy Shannon on bass and Marlise Mason on drums)

(Painting of "Trail of Tears" by Robert Lindneux)
Lyrics
ANDY JACKSON

I read about you in history books
Of how the Indian land you took
You may be a hero today
Defeating the British on that day

What would have happened if we had lost?
The war was over so many lives cost
Then to the white house you went
Leaders of a nation - eight years spent

Andrew Jackson blazed a trail
Andrew Jackson would not fail
The same man some would praise and cheer
Is the man others hate and fear - hate to fear

You took the Indian's land like a buccaneer
I would you were on The Trail of Tears
The supreme court said you were wrong
But that justice didn't last for too long

Perhaps there were some great things you did
But democracy's shame cannot be hid
Your legend has not stopped today
I think of the Indians who stopped to pray
