About the song
This whole song is true, from the first line to last---- minus ONE line. I was heading to Wal-Mart when my son started digging through my purse looking for a quarter for the gumball machine. He noticed the date on a dime and we ended up having a discussion that turned into a song the very next day. And since everyone always asks the same question after hearing the song... No, he didn't really break up with me in the rain, it was WORSE! He broke up with me 10 minutes after getting home from the PROM!! But that didn't rhyme! (So "You know who you are", was I THAT bad a dancer? He he he -- Just kiddin' We're cool! :)

"Memory Lane"

Just an ordinary trip to the grocery store
Suddenly turned to something more
As my 8 year old studied the face of a dime.
He said, "Man, this is old! 1975!
I bet you and Daddy weren't even alive!"
And I laughed outloud as I pondered the passage
of time.
"Son, in '75 I was in 3rd grade"
And soon I found myself driving down Memory Lane.

On Memory Lane
I can still see my house
And the sandbox where I used to play.
My favorite teacher, my first double feature
At the drive-in off Old 58
I can reach back and touch yesterday
When I'm driving down Memory Lane

My son said "1984, Mom, how old were you then?"
"Well I was turning 16, and swearin' never again
To give away my heart, my first love had torn it
in two.
I was playing the flute in the high school band
Trying hard to fit in but learning firsthand
Just to be myself, 'cause I really had nothing to
prove."
The memories were falling like a pouring rain
They flooded my heart as I drove down Memory Lane.

On Memory Lane
I remember my first date, the pain and the heart-
ache
When he broke up with me in the rain.
I was learning to drive with my father beside me.
I was screaming at each football game.
I can reach back and touch yesterday
When I'm driving down Memory Lane.

And son, twenty years from now
you might be talking with your kids
When out of nowhere you'll remember this drive
and the day we talked about this

On Memory Lane
I remember your Daddy, that night as he held me
And asked me if I'd be his bride.
I remember that mornin', the day you were born
And your father's face beaming with pride.
I can reach back and touch yesterday
When I'm driving down Memory lane

We're making new memories today
That we'll one day look back on,
the next time we're driving on
Memory Lane
