About the song
Cuba sends health workers around the world to help those hit by disasters (war, earthquakes, hurricanes). The U.S. government turned down an offer of help from Cuba after Katrina hit New Orleans. I wrote the song for a sendoff meeting of the Pastors for Peace caravan, bringing aid to Cuba.
Lyrics
Cuban Doctors

In the barrios of Venezuela,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
When an earthquake rocks the Himalayas,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
When a hurricane has hit you hard,
You never need an insurance card,
They bring you the warmth of the human heart,
Here come the Cuban doctors.

Do your children need a vaccination?
Here come the Cuban doctors.
Does granny need an eye operation?
Here come the Cuban doctors.
They can work in a hut by candlelight,
Live like you, on beans and rice,
And they don’t think this is a sacrifice,
Here come the Cuban doctors.

When healthcare costs go up like a rocket,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
When hospitals close ’cause they make no profits,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
Medicine’s more than scalpels and drugs,
It’s science and art, a labor of love,
You can’t phone it in from your country club,
Here come the Cuban doctors.

In every coal mine, factory, and office,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
We don’t want cops and we don’t need bosses,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
When solidarity’s loud and clear,
We can banish hunger, disease, and fear,
We know in our hearts it can happen here,
Here come the Cuban doctors.
. . . We are all Cuban doctors.
