About the song
In my lifetime Canada has not been in what we call an "aggressive" role with our armed forces. I've never watched as Canadian soldiers were killed in battle as they have been in Aphganistan. In many ways this is a difficult time in our history, but as our soldier always have, they are ready and willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that Canadians are safe here at home.
I felt the need to write about their work in Aphganistan and this song is theirs.
I’m A Soldier – T. Ehman (copyright 2008)

I’m a soldier and that’s what I want to be
These stripes have become a part of me
I’m not scared of what I’m gonna see
For all that I make no apology

I’ve been all around the world
Back there a wife and a little girl
Green eyes, brown hair and with a curl
My heart and my head are in whirl

I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier

Doesn’t matter what you try to say
Me and the boys we won’t go astray
Yea I know we’ve come from so far away
We’re gonna make a change here anyway

Well ya know we won’t be backin’ down
Planes over head guns blastin’ all around
Blood on my skin, blood there on the ground
But I’ll never let my buddies down

I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier

I got a helmet and these fatigues, carry my heart here on my sleeve
And I pay the price but the reward is peace, I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier

Young kids are playing in the streets
Maybe tonight they might get a little sleep
And I hope they’re not too scared of me
If you could see you sure wouldn’t disagree

From Shiloh to Afghanistan
I come home and I come back again
I got a prayer, a gun and a willing hand
To do a job and help another man

I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier, I’m a soldier
