About the song
I wrote the lyrics of the chorus at one of the darker moments in my life. A bit later, when I feeling much happier, I wrote a song around it.
Lyrics
Another note left by the door -
I used to get up in the mornings
so I could watch you drive away
but now you're very far away
because I didn't see the warnings.
Glance at your note, see what you said
and then I stumble back to bed;
pull the quilt over my aching head,
still shivering blue, cold as the dead
'cause all your warmth's with him instead.

Little steps are little lies
and though I like to hear them
I think that I should fear them
just as much as you and I fear truth.
It hardly comes as a surprise
that you want to break up
although we try to make up
little lies to cover up
the distance that we've built
by little steps.

You said it's hard when lovers part;
you found a way to make it easy:
just love a little less each day
until all love has gone away
and then you'll hardly even miss me.
Long nights alone when you're not here
another man's holding you near;
he buys your fries, he buys your beer,
he buys your whispers in his ear,
he buys just what he wants to hear:

Little steps are little lies
and though I like to hear them
I think that I should fear them
just as much as you and I fear truth.
It hardly comes as a surprise
that you want to break up
although we try to make up
little lies to cover up
the distance that we've built
by little steps.
