About the song
I was curious about the violence and lawlessness that followed Katrina. The song is from the point of view of one of the 'forgotten ones' left behind, and speculates as to why many of them took to lawlessnes. If the 'law' let them down, you can see why some would have reacted the way they did.
Lyrics
Levee?s Broken ŠJames Gordon 2005

Me and Big Eddie. we smashed the Pawn Shop Doors
Got us some ammo and a couple forty-fours.
Had to take matters into our own hands
That?s the way that things are done down here in Dixieland,
That?s the way that things are done down here in Dixieland.

Levee?s broken, water?s on the rise-
But nobody?s coming, no one hears our cries.
Come on Eddie, bring your gun
We?ll make them remember the forgotten ones
We?ll make them remember the forgotten ones

Treat us like animals and animals is what you get
Believe me you ain?t seen nothing yet.
Gonna take a lot more than a corps of engineers
?cause more than a levee?s broken round here.
?cause more than a levee?s broken round here.

Chorus:

So we took what we needed... it only seemed fair.
?cuz they knew this was comin?... but they didn?t care.
Look out- Eddie?s ragin? like a hurricane,
And he doesn?t mind lettin? you share his pain
And he doesn?t mind lettin? you share his pain

Chorus
