About the song
Program Notes for Cancer Ward
Cancer Ward takes its title from Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s novel of that name. The book is about a hospital in mid 20th century Soviet Union. The music develops one main melody as the story develops the cancer that grows through the main characters body. Solzhenitsyn’s writing is powerful and to the point, he lived the communist nightmare. I repeat this melody (with variation) many times to bring home the frustration Solzhenitsyn expresses about his environment
