About the song
Written in the summer of 2000. How it came about is a long story, but the tuning it was written in came into being after a long recording session with Joe Williams (recording his "Green Song"). Lullaby is one of the songs I most enjoy playing, and it might well be one that people remember.
Lyrics
The cityscape surrounds you, it is home, it shelters but surrounds you, infrastructure renders you a helpless cell but then the sky is orange, burning other people's lives, the elements are bitter cold. You are used to this. Confusion plays its part, the fire that lights the sky, and keeps you warm, puts smoke into your eyes, is fuelled by all there lies, there's no escape, you're working late again.
I know this ain't no lullaby
Heaven hates no lullaby
It's too late to learn to cry
We all meet hardship. Heaven knows what a way for hope to die
Facing down a one way street, Like facing up to other people's memories of yesterday, will always stay the same. They loose the crushing pain, forget the shame, of loosing all control, you have no name today. Creations die but they had only lived inside your brain now loose their worth. The winter rain will wash away your spirit now. The city lives today.
I know this ain't no lullaby

It's too late to learn to cry
We all meet hardship. Heaven knows what a way for hope to die
