In the days after 9-11-2001, it seemed like everyone in the US suddenly became patriotic. And it wasn't even good enough to just feel it in your heart - you had to put it on your car, all over your yard, on your flagpole, in your clothes, everywhere you went you were a walking billboard for your own patriotic spirit. Patriotism then became a contact sport, one in which the person who is most patriotic wins. So from the line "I am more patriotic than you," the song was born.
