About the song
You know how people say they don't know where their songs come from, the muse just sort of lays the songs on their minds like a gift from heaven? Well, I can tell you exactly where mine come from, and lately it's been from all over. A street person gave me "I believe". When I requested a map from the Department of Transportation, folded up in it was the lyrics and a chord chart for this song. I can't explain it to this day - I think it's a cry for help.
Lyrics
I'm Still Playing The Guitar Calvin Johnson Broke
A D E
We used to play the alley and do acoustic sets
On Friday nights behind the stores that's when and were we met
Beat Happening, Young Pioneers, Wimps and Mr. Yuck
All laid down acoustic sounds back where they parked the trucks
D
We'd spread the news by word of mouth
E
We'd gather late at night
D
We'd play unplugged and mosh in mud
E
Lit by candlelight
A D E
Ian was a prodigy, lived fast and now he's dead
Same story with Rick Lewis, they bashed in his head
Now Karen's making soap down in Taos New Mexico
And Cheryl tied the knot up north, or so I am told
D E
Heather's in Seattle, so's Curt and other folks
D E A
I'm still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke
D E A
(He's still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke)
Bridge...
It seems like only yesterday he borrowed my guitar
He pounded it unmercifully It broke but he went far...
Now K's becomin' like another big time major label
I'm still working for the state to put food on the table
The years are passing by, they're just going up in smoke
I'm still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke
(He's still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke)
I'm still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke
(He's still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke)
I'm still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke
(He's still playing the guitar that Calvin Johnson broke)
