About the song
I was waiting for the light to change in the University District in Seattle, when this guy tugged on my sleeve. His face was bandaged up like a mummy, and he was wearing sun glasses. "I'll sell you a song I wrote for spare change," he mumbled through broken teeth. "Oh, all right, ya bum," I said, and gave him the contents of my pockets - 73 cents, a pack of doublemint gum, a couple of paper clips, a piece of string and 3 rubber bands. He handed me a dirty piece of paper with some words and chord changes written on it. Later, I tried playing it, filling in the missing melody the way I thought it should sound. It pretty much sucks, but I paid for it, it's mine, and that's how it is.
Lyrics
I believe
em
They say that I was cute before
C D
I drove that steering wheel through my face
If ugly was money I swear to God,
I'd own the whole damn human race
Now I spend my days in my upstairs room
And watch the world go by
I watch the seasons as they change
Watch TV, and get high
Chorus

I believe
em
I believe
C D
In the transmigration of the soul
And when night falls I get my coat
And I stuff my wallet full of bills
Going downtown to see my girl
Who says you can't buy a thrill
Soon Mary is kissing my broken mouth
As she gently strokes my scars
Don't worry, she whispers, you will be restored
To your place among the stars
Chorus
And when our time is over
I push my walker back up the hill
Shed my clothes in the darkness of my room
A shot of whisky chases sleeping pills
And sleep comes to me like a lover
Like Mary when she lies down with me
My hands stroke the knap of the cover
Soon I float above the pain and I'm free
Chorus
