Let's Hear It For The Funk Brothers

The band's heartfelt tribute to "The Funk Brothers," the little-known group of studio musicians that were responsible for the grooves & licks behind almost every Motown hit that came out of Detroit.
The Blind Chitlin Kahunas is, quite possibly, one of the baddest live bands in the land. Every performance, an evocative eruption of individual musical prowess and collective heart & soul. Rooted in the blues, yet prolific in a masterful infusion of soul, funk, R&B, jazz, folk, outlaw country, pop and classic rock influences ... creating a wholly original vibe with a strangely familiar tone. A "jam band" of immense proportion, even. Over 120 years of combined musical experience are brought to bear in every song, with an unrivaled sense of dynamic flow ... from heart-wrenching, spine tingling lows to jaw-dropping, ear-scorching highs. Searing guitar solos, infectious bass grooves, mesmerizing keyboard work, expressive drumming and truly soulful singing. Four exceptionally talented, veteran musicians and long-time friends ... finally united ... and having one hell of a great time. Revered by their peers as top-notch players, the band features the undeniable talents of guitarist & vocalist Chris Bovard, bassist & vocalist Kim "Kimbo" Reichley, keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Webb Kline and drummer & vocalist Joel B Vincent. Over the years, each has worked with, played alongside or shared stages with a veritable "who's who" of well-known artists, including Bo Diddley, Popa Chubby, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tino Gonzalez, Joan Osborne, Henry Kapono, David Rose, The Pretenders, Buddy Miles, Davy Jones, Hybrid ice, Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Grace Jones, Levon Helm, Tanya Tucker, Kenny Loggins, Randy Travis and many more. As The Blind Chitlin Kahunas, they have opened shows for or shared stages with the likes of Tower Of Power, Chris Duarte, The Nighthawks, Levon Helm, Smokin' Joe Kubek, Tab Benoit, Hubert Sumlin, Corky Siegel, David Johanssen, Otis Taylor, Ann Rabson and many others. The Blind Chitlin Kahunas are also two-time International Blues Challenge Semi-Finalists, having been selected twice as one of the 100 best blues bands from around the world, and, heralded as one of the great unsung guitar heroes on the modern blues scene, guitarist Chris Bovard has the singular distinction of having his very own "Kahuna Signature Series" guitar, commissioned, designed & manufactured by Heritage Guitar Company (the original Gibson factory & luthiers). In 2010, the band has been a Top 10 Artist in the SoundClick Blues & Blues Rock Charts, and their latest full-length, original release, "This Old Guitar," has been met with glowing reviews, strong Internet attention and radio airplay across the U.S. and Europe. From smoky pubs to concert stages, the band never fails to leave audiences speechless and feeling touched by something special. With an always-growing legion of devoted fans, The Blind Chitlin Kahunas is a band not to miss ... a band whose musical virtuousity is rivaled only by their sincere passion in sharing themselves completely with an audience ... a band that lives for the groove that makes people move. This isn't just the blues. It's music for your soul ... fortified, funkified & ferocious.
Band/artist history
The band was originally formed by Chris & Kimbo in 2006, along with drummer Rod Bower. Rod departed a few years ago to further pursue his successful sound engineering career (he runs an outstanding sound company in central PA called Ohmm Sound). After working with a few different drummers on a rotating basis to test "the fit," including Jeremy Hummel (Breaking Benjamin) and Jake Kline (Earl Pickens/Billy Kelly), Joel enthusiastically signed on without a moment's hesitation. About a year later, in 2009, Webb moved back to Pennsylvania after a few years in Nashville doing session & live work ... he sat in a bunch of times ... and that was it. We've known & respected each other for decades, and the musical chemistry was just undeniable. Plus, we actually like hanging out together ... imagine that!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
The band is based in Northcentral Pennsylvania, although individually spread out across a 45-mile radius ... and performs regularly throughout the northeastern US at pubs, clubs, concert halls & music festivals. Blues festivals are a favorite, but we also adore playing at some of our beloved hometown pubs.
Your musical influences
Our musical influences are almost impossible to list, since the band members all have different musical backgrounds & experience ... but the genres of soul, funk, R&B and a little outlaw country definitely inspire our music in a general way. Despite starting as a so-called "blues band," we're enjoying the more recent labeling we've received as being a "jam band" ... because that's what we do live ... jam our way through any given tune to see where the music will take us (and the audience).
What equipment do you use?
We have lists of our gear & favorite stuff listed on our website for anyone interested in that (kahunamusic.com).
Anything else?
We hope to see you at a show soon!
