REVIEW OF: "A COLD WALK THROUGH HELL"
I like this a lot. Great production and engineering. Beat is nice - I like the strings and the hard hitting sound, a little repetitive but overall it works. Good vocals for sure. Nice flow and content. First emcee is just dope, second is ill too - took me a second to get behind his delivery be he won me over, third verse doesn't disappoint either - a little tougher to pick out of the mix; maybe different eq on the vocal track would make it stand out better. This track really reminds me of Non-Phixion which is a good thing. You guys are staying true to real hip hop so I've gotta give you your props there. This is all around professional quality and an artist that I'll have to check out more of. This gets a station add.
10/10

REVIEW OF: "OLD MAN
First impression: Intro is just a touch empty in that it runs just a bit long and is a bit abrupt of a transition to the tune. I'd like to hear something build up to the drum entrance, if even a montage of sounds ie: military helicopter vs. a DJ scratching or something... (Granted that's being pretty nit-picky, but the fundamentals of this song are quite strong...so I've gotta focus on the details )
Details like the tiny time / meter glitch going into the 3rd verse. The lyric starts in just a smidge early and interrupts the flow for a a picky guy like me. Granted, it can be a challenge when splicing in the song samples (nicely done choice of songs, by the way. Really adds to the mood in addition to the groove.) Overall, I find the reverb a bit heavy on the snare, and lacks a bit of low-end 'something' in the mix. Kick drum has some, but needs something a bit more like a bass line to really get the groove going for me. (as a bass player, i'm a bit biased though... )
Lyrics are interesting. Good rhyme combinations and mixes up the flow of the lyric nicely. The theme is a nice take on a son honoring his father, showing him that he's watched and learned--maybe even if it didn't seem like it at the time. It's obviously sincere--scoring big points from me, since people aren't alwayseager to really put themselves out there like that. Nicely done.
A thinking piece, more than an all-out jam. Points for being true to yourself, your family and your feelings. Again, nice job overall.

REVIEW OF: "VICTIMS"
Hardcore rap at this juncture has been played out, its subject matter & vocabulary laid out & stomped over like the bins at the Goodwill outlet, full of wannabe psuedo Scarface/Limpdick play-act Pimps churning thru territory thats 2x recycled. Yeah, "big bad superfly, getting rich, staying high, letting bitches suck your dick, watch another homeboy die... "
Takes vision...some cat with a fresh, camara eye, a twisted sense of humor & a subversive streak to find the gold where everyone was already lookiing.
IQ has discovered a niche and mined it. f***, he owns it, with a 200+ catalogue that explores the dark, sick peepshow/pulp Americana. He does it with that familiar gangsta-bravado boast persona, using the established MIDI beat rhyme schemes & takes us into a gothic, fun house mirrored universe where nearly every rap lives up to its evocative title & delivers. I'll be picking thru these like I'm Quentin f***in Tuarantino at an endless midnight movie festival.
Start with "Victims" with its news audio sample intro then jump to the hilarious, answering machine bit which displays his sampling & editing skills - Oh yeah, kiddies, listen up to the music he's stitching with- it ain't played out samples from the GW bin, he breaks off a piece of something unexpected and fresh. Only 1 nit IQ - drop that bass down it, bleeds into your voice and muddy it up - Your fans (me) gotta hear every word.

REVIEW OF: "OLD MAN"
There is no genre on Soundclick more prolific than hip hop and/or rap. Take IQ The Goon To End Them All for example, his page has a grand total of 224 tracks so expect to be there for a few week listening through that lot; should instrumental beats mixed in with 'proper' rap tracks is your thing. It isn't often, unfortunately because I happen to like hip hop, that you get these artists on the Critics Corner forum - hopefully they have plenty of their peers ripping shreds in them I've liked most of the hip hop I have been offered for review down the years particularly the grittier kind. See, I don't mind a bit of cussing so long as its fekking relevant, you understand?
Strrrriiikkkkkkee....
I am so glad I finally got to hear this artist because Old Man is the same Old Man (well bits of it anyway) by Neil Young that I loved to bits when I was a lot, lot younger. IQ' s Old Man is in fact, a song to his father. Being a father myself I would be proud and honoured to have such a song presented to me by my sons. It says more than mere words ever could. Mind you, I am heavily biased because - as I say - I love the Neil Young original. Knowing that, you would think I would be super-critical if it was handled in the wrong way. Like a lot of older songs, it has personal meaning for me and you KNOW I'd carve somebody a whole new butthole if they desecrated a masterpeice.
IQ sez as if.......
Old Man is a production marvel - especially for the genre, and the seamless mashing of the two tracks is a joy to behold. Not sure of the lagality of all this but who cares when you have such a hot tune in your grasp. Trust me, if you liked the original too, you are going to love this. What about those who are not 102? What do they know and care about rocks golden age? What they would hear is a classic example of how to sound fresh, exciting and relevant. IQ raps like a pro, with a deep beautifully recorded voice that makes reading the lyric sheet redundant and not a swear word in sight. When I came to thinking about how to rate this, I tried real hard to put my predjudice aside and look at the track objectively but whichever way I looked it always came back to the same thing.
MUST HAVE blend of rock and hip hop. A gem.
