Steve Gilmore Reviews: Critical Theory - Dark Dub
We are not talking about the modern sense of dub here (ie a kinda karaoke version) but a subtler, intensely rhythmic take on an original or - if you are clever enough - an original track in its own right. CT is obviously from the clever enough end of the gene pool because the one thing that stamps this track is authenticity. From the splendidly believeable echo delays, to the pile-it-on of other sections, Dark Dub stands up to even the closest scrutiny. Admittedly it gets into a more modern groove towards the end but certainly the opening sections of this track exemplify what makes dub so special and top marks to Critical Theory for getting this one right. On the strength of this I also had a listen to D'habitude, another clever blending of styles - in this case some very strange dancey style overlaid with some very cool jazzy overtones that perk my interest considerably. Not much doubt that Critical Theory is an artist well worth getting caught up with and I am definitely looking forward to hearing more from this very interesting artist.

Highly Recommended (with a sneaky Must Have for Dark Dub, a producers wet dream)

HOT or FLOP reviews
Jazz has sometimes perplexed me, amused me and at times frightened the living mama out of me. So when my newbie ears first heard the blend of light jazz chords and dance fused in some seedy club way back when beer was £1.60 a pint, I was impressed. I was also snogging the pants of some hot chick at the time. Maybe that helped. Not that this track is out and out jazz though. It isnt. Its far more subtle in its approach. I just wanted to talk about my memory there for a moment, because when i played "dhabitude" for the first time it reminded me of that night. The piano, the brushes on the skins and the sax noting off its drooly line then the beats kick in full swing whilst I'm swapping spit. Legend.

This project from the Midlands in England, brings in "dhabitude" on a dub jazz feel. You can imagine the smokey filled bar in a side street with the guy wiping the counter then the glass your just about to drink out of with the same cloth, after you've ordered your shot of JD on the rocks. A nicely introduced kick continues the feel where things really get going with the full beat treatment. Ambient in approach and with a distinct Deep House flavour with nice ebbs and flows, there are some great moments here. This should be a worthy addition to a DJ's collection with a good length for a nice cut and blend in a set wanting to bring on the groove and keep the floor eager

Very enjoyable listen all around though, and I found myself playing it more than twice. Really worked your beat in well with that sample, all the individual sounds you used were complimentary, nothing standing out that was offensive at all really.

Good sound mate.. really.. growing on me even as I type as well. Nice job!
