Dear Hip Hop
Hip Hop – not my favourite genre I will honestly admit here (again), but I am looking forward to putting my ears to it nonetheless! It certainly provides variety to what can easily become an audio rut for me here on Soundclick if I were too choosy *winks*
So, *rubs hands* lets get down to business!
I.K.E. B!TCH (I am seriously peeved every time I have to type this band name due to the number of keys and the symbols that require pressing – thank goodness for the copy+paste function) never really suggested a track for me to review, and because I stand to think that any more than one hip-hop song at once is still putting my ears through too much burden, I went and picked “Dear Hip Hop” for critique (it being the best of the small sample I listened to).
And you know what? At first listen, “Dear Hip Hop” was not bad. It was a pleasant surprise to find I was not repulsed by this track or hanging for its last second to pass. The squeaky mouse-like female background vocal that ebbed and flowed at an arms length from the main vocal and instrumental line seemed to add a sugary and perky touch to what is essentially a very masculine song. Normally voices of such a nature come off as annoying and grate terribly on the ears, but the application of it in this situation was apt.
The paced rhythm and beat was slick and allowed for the singing (or more accurately described as rapping as I soon found out!) to flow out smoothly without seeming like the words were trying to catch up with the melodic progression. The tone of the singer is appropriate for this genre and his phrasing is very well presented - its marriage with the other vocal lines (and there were a number of them!) never seemed to come across as too busy or cluttered, showing me that the choice of vocal styles and the points where they were employed have been chosen intelligently.
I have to also say that even though this is inherently a rap song (not Hip Hop – but they are close who cares right?), the background melody when fused with the hypnotic beat saves the piece from sounding like a trash can of random sounds, words, and casual any-way rhymes. If I had to make a confession here, I would say that most of my attention was hooked by this melodic arrangement and rhythm – and it became quite addictive!
I think though, after several listens, what I found to appreciate the best and thought was most unique about this song was its lyrics. The personification of the rap/hip hop genre over history and its influence now in today’s culture was a clever ploy and it certainly made me devote more loyal attention to the singer’s words. At first, I had no idea what I.K.E. B!TCH was trying to tell us in this track of his, but once I found out, I was quite pleased to say the least.
I.K.E. B!TCH, I have to admit, you surpassed my expectations with this slick and well produced track of yours, and I will say here that it has potential to not only appeal to the urban fans out there, but also have the possibility to liken to the mainstream crowd as well. It is definitely solid hip hop and rap to the core, but it is no so urban that it disenfranchises the very earliest fans to this genre.
Good work and recommended for a listen! (although visiting your page was almost like walking through a very angry graveyard with all ominous axes, deep reds and heavy blacks *shivers*)
p/s: On some personal notes, I am not a fan of rappers/hip hop artists who talk about themselves or repeatedly shine their name within a song – let your song’s message vibrate and fans will remember your name. You do not need to brainwash them
