Why? Because RockerBiff makes you take notice, and not with just his name. This single, "God Amongst Insects" also makes you pay attention. Just the name gave me chills. And now, on with the music...
There are musicians, and then there are composers. There are those that understand how to write a song and there are those that know how to bring it to full life, to make the song walk and talk like Dr. Frankenstein made his monster walk and talk. Unlike Frankenstein's monster, though, this track is smooth... without being smooth. It's catchy... without being catchy. Let me try and explain...
Normally there is a 'hook' to a song. Something that catches your attention. But my attention is already grabbed. Now I'm being lulled and pulled through a dreamscape of imagery that these notes pull out. Symphonic, experimental at places, and definitely not without it's electronics (which I personally love). Up and down this track takes me, shows me places I've never seen before.
As a whole, the song flows very well. It truly is a song for the God amongst the insects. Driving and moving without being overpowerful. It's totally refreshing to hear a composed (notice I say 'composed', not 'written') track without any noticable drum beats. The synths take care of that. The ambient sounds take care of that. If you like the kind of electronic music that allows you to dance, look elsewhere.
However, if you like electronic tracks that breathe into your mind and make you just sit back and THINK... listen to this. Drink a beer, watch a poster under a blacklight, and just think.
The production is very good, very tight all around. Nothing sounding out of place or overpowering. Execution is good as well, though not maybe the best I've ever heard. This song doesn't flow, it picks. It points. It lives.
Even though the song has repetitive spots, they are only really noticable after you've listened to it a few times. When each instrument brings it's own perspective to the song, it's new. I would not be surprised to hear this on a soundtrack of a movie like 'Devil's Advocate' or 'Vanilla Sky'. Esoteric and futuristic. Technology and emotion forged into one.
