Another new name to me musically, although I have noticed some of this artists postings on Soundclick's forums. Wray is from the USA and is an Alternative artist I suggest you check out. From the style of production and arrangement on Money Bird, and the performance standards, Wray is going to be an artist we are all going to become more familiar with in the coming months. It isn't, believe me, something I can say about all new artists but its as equally obvious no matter how new he is to Soundclick, he is not new to the art of music making.
Although Wray places himself in the folk category, I think I'd tend to agree with his Alternative placing certainly from the musical style of this track. Instrumentally it's main feature has to be the acoustic guitars but there's a lot more going on in this track than yer standard folk tune. There's a great lolloping rhythm section for a start and a drum track that is right on the money, all produced and buffed to a high gloss. It all means nothing, of course, if there isn't a decent song to pin it all down and Money Bird has that and then some. The 'I'm going blind' chorus has an unequalled infection rate - at least in my household.
There again, I really do have a soft spot for these acoustic rock vocal tracks (see my reviews of Silvertrain, Starting Over, Cameron Peirce et all for proof) and Wray's Money Bird looks set to join that august company. Over the last few days I have been playing this more and more purely for the pleasure of it, rather than for any reviewing purposes. That usually spells that I have a 'keeper' on my hands and have marked Wray as an artist to be watched, there's a classic track brewing from this artist or I've missed the point entirely...
Terrific song anyway...
