What's poplockin.. mr beatnik tha verbal shit spitta here, and I'm standing in for my record teacher and old friend Mr Dayo Adewuyi this month. Welcome along.. Here's how the starting line up went.
Another smashing CDR session last night. Attendance – quiet. Percentage of hardcore heads – high. Quality and quantity – off the chain! Here’s a few I got into over the course of the evening.
Lodestone – Blue Waters
Wow. Tune of the night, simple. One of 2 tracks that gave me spine tingles, along with the Emeson track below. This cat reminds me a bit of the mighty Mr Hudson. Maybe it’s the quintessential English accent carrying the lyrics.. Beyond that the comparisons end! Over a spaced out, atmospheric beat full of sweeps, drops and far out sounds, Lodestone airs the streaming contents of his consciousness. Like a beat poet’s answer to The Streets (easy jimmy jean!). Smashing, and highly original. Big respect Lodestone.
Sundrop – Dj Don Cuco and Emeson
A proper “spaceship rideâ€쳌.. Emeson is my kind of songwriting, astral travelling jazztronaut. This space ballad really did it for me – wicked production, universe exploring lyrics and strong ideas, lovingly arranged. Proper space soul! Big.
Aether – Backlight
Aether’s one of 2 producers at CDR that’s been consistently holding it down in the “technoâ€쳌 idiom (along with his cohort and partner in criminology the mighty Graham Bergs). I’m always blown away by the density, feel and engineering of their tracks. Always crisp! This one was no exception. Strong carl craig influences in terms of sounds, excellent arrangement, lovely balance and a powerful vibe. Definitely knocked me for 6! I need a cd from you mate. Brilliant.
Ph2 – Bergs
Continuing with the other half of the techno twosome, Graham’s acidic tech house workout was another highlight for me. Crunchy hi hats (no SP1200 here though.. digital downsampling cleverness!), a 303esque drop and the biggest, fattest, cleanest kick drum of the whole evening.. When it came in, I just knew it had to be the Berg meister. Another epic banger warm enough to melt the ice grahams (hihi) at the south pole. Strong music. Respect.
London – Oriol
I always listen closely for Oriol’s music. He is utterly talented – those 4 years of music study paid off! A just blaze-esque intro segueway into a housey banger, those fantastic leads and arpeggios that only the oriol can pull off. I don’t think he’s ever submitted a song I didn’t like! My CDR MVP of the year. Sign this guy, somebody. If I had any money I would do myself!
Spooge – Jet
Spooge is another top gent down at CDR that always comes with the properly engineered bangers. This tune was no exception. Dirty, grimey and deep, all the hallmarks of Spooge written all over it. Definitely got the crowd jigging from leg to leg as we warmed up for the evening.
Free – Richard Brown
Not newness from Rich and Bruno – soon come I hope, because their sound has maturity, elegance and talent oozing from just about every element in the mix – but a welcome respin for this CDR classic with a extended solo from my upstairs-gyaling-playing and generally super chirpy housemate Ben “Hadders the Baddersâ€쳌 Hadwen. And what a solo.. No wrong notes, and no right ones either! This track was the only one at CDR with proper mizells style changes in it. Rich and Bruno know ALL about the changes. I’ll never tire of this, a cut above the rest.
Moshun – Analog Jones
I have to thank Cleo for hipping me to the world of analog jones via myouterspace. Always original and banging leftfield productions. This one was on a wonky hip hop tip with techno influences. Great use of odd sounds, very original production. Duchess if you’re reading, you might want to hit mans up on myspace for some vocals! I know he’s keen
Ill be mine - Nocturnal Sunshine
Dayo’s fave, Nocturnal Sunshine steps up with another dark and twisted house number. Like the moniker, her work is always characterised with a strong contrast between the dark and the light, happy bright touches breaking through a dark, churning mechanical groove. Always strong.
Fighting Weight –Biro Rupi
Rupi brought the old school 808 vibe to CDR this session.. Proper electro hip hop vibes. Love the chopped up rap accapella, wish I was nerdy enough to name what he used. Wicked bass.
Roto Magica – Energy And The Pimps
Brilliantly odd ball.. Mad chopped up rock sample. A very fresh vibe. I was feeling this. Someone else under an alias? I love the peeps who bring their own style to CDR
Bellars Choice - ?
Not sure who or what this is, but standing in for Daisuke Tanabe this session in the glitchy stakes, a very complex and dense track with hints of Aphex Twin amongst others, marinading in a melting pot of organic sounds. Loved it. Different.
Thy Wants – Darko / Lucky Day – Super 10
2 Darko licks this session. First was a deep and grindin groove with crazed bass solo, the second a very commercially viable electro house track with a porno element to it. I preferred the second, definitely a “mashed up at 4 am on the dancefloorâ€쳌 selection.
My Girl – D.Ablo
Terrafirma in the house. D.Ablo never disappoints. VOCALIST as my friend from Lagos would say. Loved this, raw dirty beats, can’t remember who produced it (Keeno?). Excellent.
Slow – James Thomas
No where near as good as Like Water For Chocolate (injoke alert), but this hip hop nerd drove us all nuts with his beats. James Thomas, big up your kebab raps sir. This beat got serious respect and applause.. Wonky!
Christina Nicola – All I Gotta Do
Straight up commercial pop vibes, all the way to the top of the charts for this lady. I’d go straight to EMI if I were you love, you’ll give your namesake Aguilera a run for her money! Well produced.. and it had a guitar solo. Air guitar bizness.
Mayte and Lamore – Broken Soul
Wow.. Amazing! 2 ladies trading verses over a dense odd ball beat. Wicked use of the shaft hihat break. This stimulated me to say the least, in all senses of the word! A feminine answer to Emeson’s vibe, they should definitely hook up on the collab tip.
Duchess and Phil – Logical
The underground answer to Trick Me by Kelis. My fave CDR bad gyal Duchy P does it again! Big up the no-bunnin massive. VOCALIST, SIMPLE.
Guynamite – Over Now
As Dayo would say, Guynamite is synonymous with CRISS productions. Another perfectly tweaked dancefloor gem, I can see this guy crossing over into mass appeal in no time at all. Make some records Guy!
Rocket Science – Untitled
Collab biz between D.Ablo and Guynamite. It was playing as I walked in, definitely feeling this vibe. Smackin beats!
The Blippa – Fiyah
Henry Soundspecies under an alias. Wicked experimental dubstep vibes, laced with jazz samples. I’m loving this “modeâ€쳌 of Henry’s at the moment. It’s all about Bad Rain.. Massive tune!
Massive love to Tony and Gavin, the baddest boys around, simple.
Peace and see you next time
beats
His voice is soulful and new, and he has created a bittersweet vibe that the liner notes term "bittersoul".
I think this term is fitting. I can't wait for his album.
''emeson's music sounds like a samurai dawn battle of shaolin electronica versus tiger claw soul''
Begin your earthly escape with emeson’s ‘are you going my way?’, letting the cool waves of the tune swim over your limbs, only to be brought back to your initial verve with the next track, ‘audiocentric’. Unreserved musical magnetism. The beat will take you to the soaring place where dreams are made, just as ‘dreamweaver’ begins its alluring ripple-like beat. Relax, close your eyes and let emeson grant all your wishes for free… Pure ecstasy in dreaming.
Awaken yourself from the dream and climb into the ‘black space coupe’, where your supersonic exploration of the ends of the universe begins. Flying through star-filled skies, lay back and recline in the enchanted ride, swiftly filtering through the darkness, towards the light of the night. Listen to the sounds of space and love permeating the rhythms of ‘whenwemakemusic’ as the dream expands to encompass you body and soul. The view from above: awesome, entirely irresistible.
Take a dive down into the depths of the sea, where you’ll find the hidden city, in the track ‘star of atlantis’. Blindingly beautiful, take in the magical blue light of the ocean, alluring you further and further away from reality and into the divine.
Splash out of the surf and emerge into the truth with ‘solly’s perplexity’, the track weaving a tale of one man’s bewildering confrontation with his own choices of living and being.
Still planted firmly on earth, follow the nostalgic footprints of emeson’s ‘rose gold’, peering through the eyes of a boy growing up in Lenton. Finding a future for himself amidst a myriad of challenges and sensory illusions, emeson’s musical gift persists. Allow yourself to be teleported to another time zone and place, as his childhood unfurls before you.
From the street corners and avenues of Nottingham, emeson brings you inside from the cold with ‘minding, ft. ellie’. The funky words, the ethereal beat and the smooth tune will endear you to sit beside Ellie and mind your own business – but not for long, as the next track, ‘check for static’ rhythmically pulses through you… Feel the keyboard harmony take you once more higher into the celestial realm, where the music will befriend your senses.
Continue exploring the airy dominion with the instrumental ‘ixia’ and meditate on the elastic echoes, infusing infinite bliss with liquid fantasy, reminiscent of his time in Greece.
Writing from the heart, emeson’s album continues with ‘no reason’, revealing emotionally charged nuances, igniting pain, passion and obsession – bittersoul at its finest. Emerging from the expressive beats of ‘no reason’, ‘whispers in the rain’, moves you to a place where heartbroken resentment and soulful tones merge into one, revealing a story deeply embedded between the words.
Memories. Names. Numbers. Dates. Places. Moving on from the past with ‘gone’, emeson sheds hope on the future as one man takes to being at the helm of his life once more. Conscious change. Persevering faith in life.
The album closes with ‘ellie’s vibe’. Dazzling instrumental electronica fused with undeniable audiocentric cadences, emeson expresses the realisation of utter beauty and youthfulness in Ellie…
Audiocentricities, the album: sheer brilliance.

In no particular order – these are the tunes that dazed me beyond recovery last night at CDR in Plastic People (another wicked, wicked night by the way):
Bruno "Teen Town" [Remix] (I first heard Richard Brown (easy bro) play this down in SMERSH a few months ago. Bruno seems to have tweaked it a little bit. This sounded wicked last night. It has a wicked Bass on it as well. It earned him a round of applause).
Sound Species "Big Cakes" (Brilliant Hip-hop. Because I was coming back from the bar, I was actually facing the packed room – and everyone was lost in the groove. BIG TUNE).
Beatnik "Within The CD Player" (The man of the moment delivers again. I love the way Beatnik’s music subliminally pays tribute to his Jazz heroes. Bobby Hutcherson-esque – DREAD TUNE).
Emeson "Dream Weaver" (I am glad this finally got played. A top quality tune with a gorgeous vocal. Modern day boogie music (the way we like it)).
Max Cole "Hula Hoops" (It was a pleasure to finally meet Mr. Cole. This tune arrested my attention. Just like Emeson’s tune – it featured a wicked vocalist. Big Music).
Bemi 'Untitled' (OHMYWORD! Tune! This touched me in all the right places – Respect!).
Fane Regis "Melodic Love" (Proper House music. Simple).
Dasuke Tanabe "Walking" (I always look out for this guy (good to see you sir) – he always thinks differently. He always raises the level. He is one of my CDR artists of the year. I loved his tune: Original electro music).
Garth B "Your So" (Kind of Jazz fusion meets House. Oh yes!).
4BX "Holdin’ On" (I think this should be regarded as an edit. And it worked with the packed floor and me. Everybody broke into a dance. You know we all love Tony Rallo’s classic (Big Gilles P tune). This ‘edit’ could do well in the shops & in the clubs).
Yachi "Violation" (This tune is pure rave. The kinda music that keeps you ‘awake’ on the dancefloor. Loved it).
E Darbar "Soul Navigation" (BWOY!).
----
I heard my tune of the night before the night kicked off. Dropped by Gavin (easy bro):
Ski Oakenfull “Heavenly” [Dobie Remix] – what a tune. I doff my hat to Dobie (everytime). This is my kind of House music. Full Respect sir.
And as always, big respects to Tony Nwatch. I always love his ‘work in progress’ . Inspiring!
---
A big shout to everyone I saw down there ((& everyone who submitted tunes): Beats, Richard Brown, Max Cole, Simbad, Obi, Emeson, Paula, Dasuke, Bruno, Sean Macaulay & not forgetting the Guv’nor himself – Ade (respect!).
Tony & Gavin: You guys are large…
: )
D
Caught you sometime ago jamming with Birth of Mankind at the Troy Bar...you're a bad ass.
Keep doing ya thing!!

Another wicked night – and the standard as usual was high. Shout to Tony & Gav – Full Respect as always. And big ups to everyone I saw down there.
My dazers of the night:
*Beatnik “Time Machine” (My tune of the night. There were elements of Madlib in there – who of course is one of Beatniks heroes – and it also reminded me of a ATCQ/Busta Rhymes tune I love (cant remember the name at the minute) – Happy Birthday Beats).
Special mentions:
Blythe “Un.Au.Then.Tic” (Wow! What a tune – Pure deepeness – Theo Paris-esque! I wish it had lasted longer. I wouldn’t mind a copy of this. * wink wink, nudge nudge* - LOL!!!).
Spooge “Leq” (Big shout to Mr. Spooge. This blew my head off when it came on. Pure deepness as usual. Always a pleasure sir – Full Respect!
Emeson “Black Space” (The 1st tune of the night. Nice & deep! Shout to Eddie – and not forgetting Rob Whitlock & Obi).
Afronaught “Ah Viene Broki” [Simbad Remix] (BAAD tune and the man of the moment. He is mos def going places. One of his tunes is indemand all over the world now and is set to OFFF at GoodTimes in a few weeks). All the best sir)
Cardiac “Chief Commander” (Loved this tune – it heavily borrows from Veteran musician: Chief Ebenezer Obey – a big celebrity In Nigeria. Shout to Andy – nice one).
Nocturnal Sunshine “Another Day” (I really loved this. Reminded for some reason of Da Brat – and speaking of which, what ever happened to her.).
Daisuke Tanabe “Escape” (This guy is one of my fav musicians at CDR. Very unassuming and very Deep – a pleasure to meet you Sir. This tune reminded me of an electro tune (the dub miz) we used to go nuts to in Lagos in 1983: Xena “On The Upside” – original D&B music)
Soundpieces “Emcees” (Fresh & Funky .BIG TUNE!)
Princess ‘Feeling The Pressure” (Lovely quirkiness! Loved it!).
Richard Brown “Black Rain” (Lovely Jazzy House from one of the Dons of CDR. All the best sir)
Dobielicious “New Madness” (I bet this was Dobie tune (good to see you sir) – Rough & Tough! Respect!
Kay Suzuki “Do It Slowly” (Beautiful Vocal Broken Beat – Love their clever usage of Don Blackmon ‘Hearts Desire’ – wicked tune).
Zero DB “Baubles” (Lovely tune. Love the lyrics “anything is possible”).
See you all at the next one. Have good weekends.
Salute
: )

Boyoboyoboy!!!
Every time I go, I expect to be surprised. This month did not let me down. Frickin a mazin. Head honchos Tony & Gav (isn't that a hair salon?) are to be truly thanked for this forum of ideas. Wicked stuff.
Here's my tunes of the eve (lifted directly from my phone - that might explain if it comes across as nonsense)...
Emeson: 1st tune. Really tranquil. Reminds me of Autechre in their summery blissed out moments. Lovely beats.
Afronaught: wot a tune! I want this in my collection.
Oddkidd: oh yes. Love it when claps & bass nearly hurt. Goodo. MCing was bang on.
Daisuke Tanabe: another one I want in my collection. Sounds like the early Max Tundra stuff, and/or happy Squarepusher. Wicked.
Princess: Dope techno. Kickin bit of Leftfield meets Wetherall.
Dobielicious: Beat goodness.
Joel Harrison: real '80's prod style. Pure soul.
Beatnick: Hi hats. Hi hats. Lovin the hi hats. Totally crunchy funk.
Bruno: Again, a bit of a Squarepusher sound. This time on the raver tip. Funky.
Bring on the goodness, folk. Can't wait 'til nex time.

Easy emeson,
I was down at last month’s cdr to…. as you say there was some great new music being dropped. I’m assuming you are the same emeson responsible for the “star of atlantis” joint that was aired that evening. If so I have to say I was lovin’ that tune …especially the strings and the little twist on the bassline…. exactly the type of thing that needs to be heard on the pp system.
Nice one
