Thumpin' At Gateside
Local talent 39 Dangerous Street's new release "Cultivation" was marked by their first local gig in six months. The band were in spitting form at The Gateside Inn on Saturday night. Back from a summer spent writing and recording in Perth, the band's appearance has scotched rumours that they've quit Ayrshire for good. Guitarist and vocalist William Pullar explained,
"We all moved up to Perth after Kelvin acquired some property there. We set up a wee studio and spent most of the last few months writing and arranging. The recording is done very quickly, usually in the first couple of takes."

The Gateside set started with new song "Political Thriller", featuring a stunning Steve Hook style hammered bass intro from Samantha. The song features a memorable reference to Cilla Black, a chorus to die for and the attack of a lagered up Rottweiller. More memorable new songs followed this, "Snake Bite", "Cultivation" and another stunner "Trouble In The Glen". There seems no end to what this four are capable of, and the blistering finale "Ninian" proved just that. It lasted sixteen minutes by my watch, but I could have listened for sixteen more. From its simple acoustic start, the melody grew and swelled to an anthem featuring bagpipe samples and a funky loop which seemed to come from a point somewhere between Isaac Hayes and Crown Heights Affair. A receptive crowd at The Gateside lapped all this up and were left shouting for more. This band WILL be down in Ayr to rock the night at a Powerhouse Pavilion Night as soon as I can get them back from Perth!
The "Cultivation" EP is out now on cassette from local label Splairging Glit. It can be purchased from Speed Records in Parkhouse Street and 2001 in Kyle Street. Get it now!
