Gary Paul Bryant, Imaginary Piano
On the very first spin of Gary Paul Bryant's 2005 release, Imaginary Piano, at least one thing is clear-- this guy can really play the piano. Slipping between bombast and flash or sweet/soft sentimentality, the compositions on this disc sizzle with top musicianship and well earned compositional dynamics.

The lead track, "Suite #5," does somersaults in the air as melody lines twist and curl before the tempo drops to the outstanding cut, "Will You Have Me Now." This piece lifts up as the production moves from solo piano to synth strings, sequenced drums and other background instrumentation.

Gary's skills at the keyboard shine further with simple melodies on "21st Century Waltz," as the light rhythm bubbles with levity and joy before synthesized horn blasts punctuate the spaces.

By the time "Bye Bye Now" kicks in with a driving beat and smoky bassline, listeners may be thrown by the new direction. But this funky jazz fusion cut is a hot shot track-- easily one of the best of the collection.

The direction turns once again with "Last Night in Paris," as orchestral underscore lays a foundation for more jazzy jams. With hints of ragtime and layers of melody this song again highlights the profound talent of this amazing musician/ composer.

Gary Paul Bryant's instrumental album, Imaginary Piano, shimmers with the grace and intelligence of a brilliant musician and composer. Moving through myriad styles and moods, this music is sure to hold your ears till the very last note.
