Symphonic, Dynamic, Entertaining
In a fashion that is somewhat expected from a particular type of progressive metal band we are treated to a symphonic intro. Harmony lead parts and steady rhythm from pounding drums and solid bass, it's reminiscent of Symphony X. "It's October" starts the vocals, and he's right. A few alarm bells start to ring during the verse as it sounds like we're in for a bit of a Metallica-esque time with signature riffs and a very Hetfield vocal delivery. But then, as the second part of the verse kicks in, I realise that this is in fact what Metallica would have sounded like had they taken any risks in the last 15 years (including getting themselves a decent drummer, although brilliant as he was, this one was maybe fractionally too high in the mix). The vocalist proves much more versatile and the comparisons cease. Even though there is many a repeated hooking riff, there is always something new happening to keep the interest and every break feels natural. The drummer should get a special mention for his solid yet dynamic performance. The way that his pattern increased in energy proportionately with the second guitar solo was particularly effective. The keyboards were not outstanding but did their job at moving the song along. I liked the narrative style of the vocals. Overall good work. Full marks
