Dark, moody, slightly psychadelic track with industrial overtones. Heavily FX'd hypnotic bassline hooks you quickly and keeps you listening even though the melody doesn't change throughout the song. The half-second break at just over 3 minutes sounds unnecessary first time around, but on repeat listens it fits very well. Deep timbred and slightly creepy vocals seem to take inspiration from gothic electropop, I'm getting a real Gary Numan vibe actually. Lyrically it questions the morals of establishment, or possibly religion. Aye, you'll find this one grows on you and evokes some dark imagery. I have a hankering to watch Blade Runner now.
...... Okay is, in the artists own words, a 'midi-attempt' to create a 'rocky' song. Dark atmosphere.' If I hadn't have been told, I would never even have considered how this track was made - outside of a professional curiousity. Seeing as the subject has arisen though, I have to say that if these are MIDI sounds then they sound a lot rougher than midi sounds I have been used to. My one gripe about the standard is the sounds used are pretty flat. Obviously the introduction of soundfonts gave the whole thing a kick in the ass but - ultimately - not many people care about how a track is made, merely how it sounds.
Okay sounds a lot better than okay, if you get my meaning. In common with other artists from The Nederlands, Birdyman has a certain - how can I put this? - finesse that you just don't hear elsewhere. To be sure it is as dark as billed but still exceedingly tuneful for all that. Moreover it works both instrumentally and as a coherent song, sounding like something Jah Wobble may have put his name too. Energetic, intelligent rock with a nice dance'y twist that works up a nice sweat.
One for you to enjoy and for me to dig a little deeper into what this artist does.
..... there is really nothing “wrong” or “bad” about this track. It’s just a great song! The composition and writing is absolutely amazing! It’s got a dark feel, with lots of trippy effects going on. The music flows so naturally, and each “instrument” compliments the others SO well. The sound on the “bass” makes me VERY envious. I could literally listen to this all day.
The vocals are also VERY well done. Too many times I’ll hear a good or great song that is brought down by either bad, or just unfitting vocals because a one man band has no other choice. That simply isn’t the case here. I would listen JUST for these vocals! So even if the music wasn’t as good as it is, I’d still probably be very happy to listen over and over.
My only “qualm” with the vocal track is that the whole thing is sung in a mellow “spoken word” fashion. I really love the way it sounds, but the flow of the music and the over all “feel” of the track kept me expecting to hear the vocals build up and break out into a more “emotional” climax. I think that a well-placed chorus that gets built up to by the verse would elevate this outstanding track to a whole new level. I wish I could explain that better, but I’m at a total loss for words.
Other than that one thing, I would say without question that this is, dare I say, a “perfect” track.
It reminds me a little of a Rob Zombie song, just without the “Metal” aspects and the “Rob Zombie Growl/Scream”.
I hope to hear more tracks along these lines by the Birdyman in the near future. It’s a shame that this is so far the only one he’s done in this style.
