DC Band Finds Muse in HdG, A Noteworthy Place
Not every city has enough charm or personality to inspire someone to write a song about it. Sure, there's "New York, New York" and "I Love Paris", but how many people can say their hometown has been the theme of a song? And an album?

    Havre De Grace residents can.

Callian's Dream, a Washington, D.C. area band, recently released an album entitled "Havre De Grace", featuring several songs about the city.

"The song is dedicated to Havre De Grace and all the cool people", band member Davy Shannon said. He said eight songs are on the compact disc and three are about Havre De Grace, specifically about women Shannon knows who live in Havre De Grace.

Shannon said he first came to Havre De Grace in June 2000 looking for an old friend he hadn't seen in a while. He tracked the friend thru her sister and found out she was living in Havre De Grace.

Unfortunately, Shannon was rebuffed by the woman. So instead of spending time with her, Shannon roamed Havre De Grace, city he calls "a jewel by the bay".

"The more I wandered around, the more I fell in love with the place", he said. "Young Americans" was being filmed when Shannon was hitting the streets and he said it was a carnival-like atmosphere.

Since the summer, Shannon, who works in an accounting department by day, has been back to the city many times and said he has made friends here. He would even like to live here some day.

But for now, he is settling for playing in the area. His band, which has a rocky-folksy style, played at the opening of the Hyperlight Artist Center in Aberdeen. He has also played with the local Bobby Griffin Band and he said he hopes to have a summer gig out on the deck at MacGregor's. Shannon plays instruments and sings. The other three band members are Lynette Brawer, who sings and plays keyboards, Meagan Lane who sings and plays bass and Dew Maisel who sings and plays percussion.

Where the band usually plays, Shannon said they sing "Havre De Grace" and always gets a good response. He's even sung it at the Concord Point Lighthouse.

The song lyrics mention some of the city's highlights like the lighthouse, the promenade, the Martha Lewis and MacGregor's.

"I lost a love but something else I found, Enchantment in this little town, I felt like I was right at home, Like being young another time, In this harobur of Grace I did find", the song goes.

"We would like to share the song with people, especially the wonderful people of Havre De Grace who inspired the song in the first place", Shannon said.

The rest of the lyrics can be found on a website the band created for the song.

Callian's Dream Awakes The Music Scene
Callian's Dream, a Washington, DC area based band, is bursting upon the music scene with their exceptional songwriting and personalized versions of cover songs.

Named after lead vocalist/bassist Meagan Lane's faithful cat and a medieval village in southern France, Callian's Dream new CD "Havre De Grace" features such songs as guitarist Davy Shannon's "Havre De Grace", written about the beautiful little town in Maryland where the Susquehannah River meets The Chesapeake Bay. The band got a front page write up in the local newpaper, The Record; "Near Dark Jenny" is based on the movie "Near Dark" a cult classic story of modern day vampires, it was written for the actress Jenny Wright who played Mae the vampire in the film..

Jenny seemed to have disappeared from the public eye, a clip of the song was placed on The 'Near Dark" movie website where Jenny and her mom heard the clip and emailed the band!

Lynette Brawer adds the inspirational " The Power Within" and the rocker "We're In Motion".. "Down River (Greg Arnett) and "The Blacksmith" (traditional Irish) are collaborations with members of 2nd Story and quite well done.. Next comes the beautiful flute filled ballad "A Prayer for Rikki" and the folky "Rikki's Song", songs Davy wrote for his special friend Rikki..

The album finishes up with "Marlise's Song (Chesapeake Lady) written for one of Havre De Grace's most talented artist and musician - Marlise Mason. Most of the songs were recorded "live" at various venues..

These songs and others make Callian's Dream well worth the listen- catch these guys in person if you ever get a chance and put their album on your list of "must hear". Music for the mind and body!"

If you get a chance to hear only one band this year, hear The rolling Stones, if you hear two, hear Callian's Dream!!-----SEANACHIE STREET
